Chapter 11 - The Intimidation

Arthur Sterling did not wait long to send a message. He was a man who believed that a swift display of power could crush any rebellion before it began.

Two days after Claire began reaching out to former Sterling employees, she walked Sophie home from school. As they approached their street, Claire noticed a sleek, black SUV parked directly in front of their house. Two men in dark suits were leaning against the hood, their eyes fixed entirely on Claire.

"Mom, who are they?"

Sophie's voice trembled slightly, her grip tightening on Claire's hand.

"Just bullies, sweetheart. Keep walking, head up."

As they reached the gate, the taller of the two men stepped forward, blocking their path. He didn't look angry; he looked incredibly bored, which made him far more terrifying.

"Ms. Hale. Mr. Sterling feels that you are spending too much time investigating matters that do not concern you. He suggests you focus on your little museum."

"The Oakridge center concerns the community," Claire replied smoothly. "And last time I checked, forgery is a federal crime."

The man leaned in, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper.

"Accidents happen to people who cross the street without looking, Ms. Hale. Accidents happen to their families, too. Drop the Oakridge case."

Claire felt a surge of pure, protective rage, but she kept her face completely impassive. She looked the man dead in the eye.

"Tell Mr. Sterling that if he wants to threaten me, he should have the courage to do it himself. Now, get off my property before I call the police."

The man smirked, but he stepped aside. They got into the SUV and drove away. Claire unlocked the door, her hands shaking slightly. The war had officially begun.
