Chapter 13 - The Whistleblower

Elise Mercer had completely transformed since breaking free from Victoria Langford's grasp. As the director of the employee protection program, she had built a vast network of disillusioned corporate workers. She arranged a meeting in the basement of a quiet, unassuming diner on the edge of the city.
Claire arrived at midnight, leaving Sophie safely guarded by Adrian at a secure townhouse. Sitting in the dimly lit booth was a man in his late fifties, his hands trembling around a mug of cold coffee.
"I'm David," the man said softly as Claire sat down. "I was the senior architect for Sterling Enterprises."
"Why did you leave, David?"
"Because I couldn't stomach it anymore. Sterling doesn't just steal land. The new luxury condos he builds? He uses substandard materials, bypassing safety codes by bribing the inspectors. He's building glass coffins, Claire."
Claire pulled out a digital recorder and placed it on the table.
"Can you prove this? Can you prove he orchestrated the Oakridge forgery?"
David looked nervously at the basement stairs before reaching into his coat. He pulled out a small, heavily encrypted flash drive.
"This is the shadow ledger. It contains the real invoices, the bribe payouts, and the original deed orders signed by Arthur Sterling himself. But it's locked behind a biometric encryption wall. You need his physical thumbprint to open it."
Claire took the flash drive, feeling the immense weight of the data it held.
"If we can't open it, it's useless in court."

"I know," David whispered. "But it's all I have. He destroyed the paper copies yesterday. This drive is the only evidence left. If he finds out I gave it to you, I'm a dead man."
"You're safe now," Claire promised. "Elise will get you out of the city."
