The next morning, things escalated drastically.

Maya called Claire in a panic. Sterling hadn't waited for his gala to finish making headlines. He had bribed a fast-track judge to sign an immediate eviction order for the Oakridge Community Center.

"The bulldozers are here, Claire!" Maya cried over the phone, the sound of heavy machinery roaring in the background. "They brought police officers to force us out. The children are terrified."

"Do not let them inside," Claire ordered, grabbing her laptop and the decrypted hard drive. "I am on my way."

She looked at Sophie, who was already putting on her coat.
