Chapter 27 - The Horizon
As the sun began to set over the city, casting a warm golden glow over the celebrating crowd, Claire and Sophie walked away from the noise, finding a quiet bench near the edge of the park.
The city skyline loomed in the distance. It was the same skyline that had once felt so intimidating, controlled by people like Victoria Langford and Arthur Sterling. But now, it just looked like a city—a place filled with flaws, but also capable of immense beauty and change.
"Are you tired, Mom?" Sophie asked, leaning her head against Claire's shoulder.
"A little," Claire admitted, wrapping an arm around her daughter. "But it's a good kind of tired."
"Do you think Grandma Evelyn is proud of us?"
Claire thought of her mother’s letter, the words that had started this entire journey. Power survives only when good people believe silence is safer than truth.
"I know she is, Sophie. She would be so incredibly proud of the young woman you are becoming."
They sat together in comfortable silence, watching the stars begin to appear in the twilight sky. The battles were over for now. The monsters had been dragged into the light, and the vulnerable had found their voice.
