Chapter 5: The Langford Heir
The boy’s medical record had been sealed.
Detective Ellis obtained a court order to open it.
The name shocked everyone.
Adrian Langford.
Victoria’s only son.
Adrian was now forty years old and served as chief executive of Langford Holdings. He had spent most of his adult life overseas and rarely appeared with his mother.
Claire had met him only once during negotiations involving the museum trust.
He had seemed distant but not cruel.
When contacted by police, Adrian returned to the city that afternoon.
He entered the museum through a private door, carrying no attorney and refusing to speak with his mother first.
Claire met him inside the empty ballroom.
The decorations from the gala remained in place. Wilted flowers lay near the staircase where Sophie had been accused.
Adrian looked at the marks on Sophie’s wrist.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Claire didn’t accept the apology.
“Tell me what happened underground.”
Adrian stared toward the sealed west gallery.
“I was nine. My mother brought me to the museum during construction. She was meeting Arthur.”
“Why?”
“My grandfather’s company had taken the repair contract. The money was gone, but the work wasn’t finished.”
Adrian rubbed his hands together.
“I wandered into the tunnel. Part of the ceiling collapsed. Evelyn found me and pulled me away before the stones fell.”
Claire’s eyes burned.
“My mother saved you.”
“Yes.”
“What happened afterward?”
“She confronted Arthur and my mother. They argued near the stairwell.”
His voice began to break.
“My mother told me Evelyn was trying to destroy our family. She said I had to remain silent or my father would go to prison and we would lose everything.”
“Did you see them lock her inside?”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Claire stepped away from him.
“For twenty-two years, you said nothing.”
“I was a child.”
“You haven’t been a child for a long time.”
He accepted the words without protest.
“I told myself I couldn’t remember clearly. Then I told myself the truth would hurt too many innocent employees. Eventually, silence became easier than admitting I was a coward.”
Adrian placed a small key on the table.
“My mother kept a private archive at the Langford estate. I copied everything before coming here.”
The archive contained financial records, emails, construction reports, and payment agreements.
It proved that Victoria and Arthur had diverted more than eighty million dollars from museum funds and affiliated charities.
It also proved Evelyn had survived for several hours after being locked underground.
Arthur had returned later and moved her body to the staircase to create the appearance of an accidental fall.
Claire had spent twenty-two years imagining her mother’s final moments.
Now she knew Evelyn had waited for help that never came.
Adrian looked toward her.
“I will testify.”
“Even if it destroys your company?”
“My company deserves whatever happens next.”
Claire studied him.
“Why now?”
His eyes shifted toward Sophie.
“Because last night my mother did to your daughter what she did to me. She used a frightened child to protect herself.”
Adrian signed a sworn statement.
Before leaving, he handed Claire a second envelope.
“This was in my mother’s archive.”
Inside was a photograph of Evelyn standing beside Arthur Wynn and Victoria.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
Arthur says he wants to expose the Langfords. I pray I’m not trusting the wrong man.
Claire looked up.
“Arthur planned to betray Victoria.”
“Not exactly,” Adrian said. “He planned to take control of the entire operation.”
According to the records, Arthur had secretly stored copies of every illegal transaction. He had used them to blackmail Victoria for decades.
But his final file contained a much more recent target.
Claire.
Arthur had known she was purchasing the museum trust before the transaction became public.
He had arranged for her company to acquire it.
He wanted Claire inside the museum.
The humiliation of Sophie had not been the original plan.
It had been Victoria’s desperate attempt to stop the audit.
Arthur’s plan was far more dangerous.
