Chapter 12 - Sophie’s Resolve

Inside the house, Claire immediately locked the deadbolt and drew the curtains. She pulled out her phone to call Adrian, but a small hand tugged at her sleeve.
"Mom?"
Claire looked down. Sophie wasn't crying. Instead, her jaw was set, and her eyes were filled with the same fiery determination that had allowed her to speak at the museum's grand reopening.
"I'm sorry you had to see that, Sophie. We're going to stay at a hotel tonight, just to be safe."
"No."
Claire blinked, surprised by her daughter's firm refusal.
"Sophie, those men are dangerous."
"Grandma said power only survives when good people believe silence is safer," Sophie stated, repeating the words from the museum plaque. "If we run away, the bad man wins. He gets to take Maya's school."
Claire felt a lump form in her throat. She knelt down, bringing herself to eye level with her daughter.
"You aren't scared?"
"I am scared," Sophie admitted honestly. "But being scared doesn't mean we have to hide. The children at the center are scared too. We have to help them."
Claire pulled Sophie into a tight embrace, burying her face in her daughter's hair. She had spent years trying to protect Sophie from the cruelty of the world, but in doing so, she had raised a warrior.
"Okay," Claire whispered, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "We don't run. We fight back."

She stood up, dialing a number she had saved specifically for emergencies. Elise Mercer answered on the second ring.
"Elise, I need your help. Sterling is making his move, and I need a secure location to meet a whistleblower."
