Chapter 22 - Unlocking the Truth

The fallout from the Sterling leak continued for weeks. David, the whistleblower architect, was granted full federal immunity and became the star witness in the prosecution against the corrupt building inspectors.

Because of the early exposure, the city was able to evacuate the structurally compromised luxury condos before a disaster could occur. The residents, many of whom had previously looked down on the poorer neighborhoods, publicly thanked the Oakridge community for saving their lives.

Claire’s frozen bank accounts were completely restored, along with a massive public apology from the bank's board of directors.

One evening, Claire sat in her living room, watching the news coverage. Sophie was on the floor, drawing a picture of the community center.

"Mom?"

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Are there more bad men like Mr. Sterling out there?"

Claire looked at her daughter, choosing her words carefully.

"Yes, Sophie. As long as there is power, there will be people who try to abuse it. We can't stop all of them."

"But we can stop the ones we see," Sophie said simply.

Claire smiled.

"Yes. We stop the ones we see."

The doorbell rang. Claire opened it to find Elise Mercer standing there, holding a large, beautifully wrapped box.

"A gift," Elise said, grinning. "From the families at Oakridge."
