Chapter 40 - The Unbreakable Horizon

The golden hour of sunset cast a breathtaking, fiery glow over the mountain peaks, painting the sky in deep shades of violet and burning orange.
Nora sat comfortably on the wide, wooden porch of their cabin, a steaming mug of herbal tea resting in her hands. The air was cool and smelled sharply of pine and woodsmoke.
Elias was sitting in the rocking chair beside her, gently whittling a small wooden horse for Hazel.
Hazel, now a vibrant, energetic pre-teen, was running around the edge of the yard, expertly catching fireflies in a glass jar and releasing them back into the twilight, her laughter ringing out clear and bright against the quiet mountain backdrop.

"It's perfect," Elias murmured, his eyes tracking Hazel as she sprinted across the grass, completely unburdened by the shadows of the past.
"It really is," Nora agreed, reaching over to lace her fingers securely through his.
