Chapter 37 - The Ten-Year Mark

|
The ten-year anniversary of Nora’s arrival in Oakhaven coincided perfectly with the annual Autumn Equinox Festival.
The town square was ablaze with vibrant decorations, glowing lanterns, and the smell of roasting apples and cinnamon. The entire community had turned out to celebrate the changing of the season, but there was an unspoken, collective understanding that they were also celebrating their mayor.
Nora stood near the edge of the square, holding a warm cup of cider, watching the festivities unfold.
A local band was playing a lively, upbeat tune on the wooden stage. Elias was in the center of the crowd, spinning an ecstatic, laughing ten-year-old Hazel around in circles until they were both dizzy.
Silas hobbled over, leaning comfortably on his carved cane, and stood beside Nora.
"It’s a good party," Silas noted, looking out over the dancing crowd.
"It's a beautiful party, Silas," Nora agreed, taking a sip of her cider.
She remembered the cold, sterile mansion of her youth, where parties were silent, rigid affairs designed strictly to impress powerful politicians and intimidate corporate rivals. Laughter was considered unprofessional; joy was viewed as a weakness.
She looked at the chaotic, messy, incredibly vibrant scene in front of her. She saw Martha dancing wildly with the mechanic. She saw Lily laughing with a group of young students. She saw the bright, unburdened face of her daughter illuminated by the firelight.
"You know, when you first showed up here, looking like a deer caught in the headlights, I didn't think you'd last the winter," Silas admitted with a gruff chuckle.
"I didn't think I would either," Nora smiled, looking at him affectionately. "But I had good neighbors to keep me from freezing."
Silas patted her shoulder gently. "You kept us from freezing, too, Nora. Don't ever forget that."
Elias walked over, breathless and laughing, carrying a tired but happy Hazel on his back.

"The princess demands hot chocolate," Elias announced, wrapping his free arm around Nora's waist and pulling her close.
"Then the princess shall have it," Nora laughed, leaning into her husband’s warm embrace, feeling entirely, beautifully complete.
