Chapter 22 - The Reflection in the Glass

Lily slept for fourteen straight hours in the spare bedroom above the bookstore. When she finally ventured downstairs, the sun was shining brightly through the front windows, casting warm, golden squares across the wooden floorboards.
Nora was quietly organizing a display of local history books when Lily tentatively approached the counter. The girl looked exhausted, but the absolute, paralyzing terror from the night before had slightly faded.
"I should go," Lily said softly, gripping the strap of her duffel bag. "If they track my phone, they'll bring the police. My father has a lot of money. He has lawyers who destroy people for a living. I don't want to bring that kind of trouble to your door."
Nora stopped stacking the books. She looked at Lily, seeing a perfect, heartbreaking reflection of the terrified girl she had been the night she crashed her car on the mountain pass.
"Lily, look at me," Nora said, her voice completely devoid of fear.
The young girl looked up, surprised by the absolute authority in Nora's tone.
"My father was Arthur Sterling," Nora stated calmly. "He ran a multi-billion-dollar corporate empire. He had more lawyers on retainer than this entire town has residents. He controlled senators, judges, and police chiefs. When I ran away from him, he tried to use every single ounce of that power to drag me back in chains."
Lily’s eyes widened in profound shock. "You're... you're a Sterling? But you live here. In a bookstore."
"I am a bookseller," Nora corrected with a fierce, proud smile. "And my father is dead. But before he died, I learned a very important lesson about powerful men. Their power only works if you are afraid of the consequences."
Nora walked around the counter and gently placed her hands on Lily's shoulders.

"You do not need to run anymore, Lily. I have a legal team that specializes in building impenetrable firewalls against wealthy, abusive families," Nora promised, her eyes burning with an unshakeable conviction. "If your father tries to step foot in Oakhaven, he will find out exactly what happens when you threaten one of our own. You can stay here. You can work in the shop. You can finally rest."
Lily stared at her, the heavy, suffocating weight of her trauma finally beginning to crack. She dropped her duffel bag to the floor and threw her arms around Nora, sobbing with profound, overwhelming relief.
