Chapter 13 - The Stranger in Town

|

Autumn painted Oakhaven in brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold. The air grew crisp, and the town began preparing for the annual Harvest Festival.

The peace of the season was disrupted when a sleek, black town car—a vehicle entirely out of place in the rustic mountain town—pulled up in front of Margaret’s bookstore.

Nora was organizing a display of local history books when the bell above the door chimed.

A man stepped inside. He wore an expensive, tailored suit that looked identical to the ones Arthur’s executives used to wear. He surveyed the dusty, cozy bookstore with thinly veiled disdain before his eyes landed on Nora.

"Eleanor Sterling," the man said smoothly, stepping toward the counter. "Or do you prefer Nora now?"

Nora’s blood ran cold. The past had found her.

"My name is Nora," she stated, her voice remarkably steady despite the frantic beating of her heart. "What do you want?"

"I am Richard Hayes, lead counsel for the Sterling Corporate Board," the man introduced himself, placing a slim briefcase on the counter. "We have been looking for you since your father's passing."

"You found me," Nora said coldly. "Now you can leave."

"It is not that simple," Hayes replied, opening the briefcase. "Your father's sudden death left the corporate leadership in a precarious position. The board requires your signature to formally release your voting rights within the primary holding company. You cannot simply vanish with the trust fund and ignore your fiduciary responsibilities."

Nora stared at the documents he placed on the counter. They were dense, filled with legal jargon designed to trap and confuse.

"I abdicated those responsibilities the night I left," Nora said, refusing to touch the papers.

"The board disagrees," Hayes smiled a sharp, predatory smile. "If you refuse to sign, they are prepared to file an injunction freezing the trust fund until your mental competency can be evaluated. They will argue that your sudden disappearance and refusal to engage with the estate is evidence of instability."

It was the same tactic Arthur had used. Threaten her autonomy to force her compliance.

Margaret emerged from the back room, holding a heavy, leather-bound encyclopedia. She took one look at Hayes and the tension in the room.

"Are you buying a book, sir?" Margaret asked sharply.

"This is a private legal matter," Hayes dismissed her without looking away from Nora.

"This is my bookstore," Margaret countered, stepping up beside Nora. "And if you aren't buying a book, you are trespassing."

Hayes sighed, turning his attention back to Nora. "You have twenty-four hours to review the documents, Eleanor. I am staying at the inn down the street. I strongly suggest you sign them."

He turned and walked out, the bell chiming mockingly behind him.

Nora stared at the door, her hands shaking. The cage was trying to close around her again.
