Chapter 29 - The Announcement

The news of the pregnancy was impossible to keep a secret in a town as tightly knit as Oakhaven, nor did Nora and Elias want to hide it.
That Sunday afternoon, they walked into Martha’s diner. The place was packed with the usual post-church crowd, the air thick with the smell of frying bacon and fresh coffee.
Silas, Margaret, and Lily were sitting at their usual large booth in the back corner.
Elias slid into the booth beside Silas, while Nora took a seat next to Margaret, unable to suppress the massive, glowing smile on her face.
"You two look entirely too cheerful for a Sunday morning," Margaret observed sharply, adjusting her reading glasses. "Did you finally convince the town council to fix the potholes on Main Street?"
"Better than that," Elias grinned, reaching across the table to interlace his fingers with Nora’s.
"Nora is pregnant," Elias announced proudly, his voice carrying just enough to turn the heads of the people sitting at the neighboring tables.
The diner instantly erupted into joyous, chaotic celebration.
Martha dropped a handful of menus onto the counter and rushed over, pulling Nora into a massive, flour-covered hug. "Oh, sweetheart! That is the best news this town has heard in years! We are baking a whole cherry pie just for you, completely on the house!"
Silas clapped Elias forcefully on the shoulder, laughing a deep, rumbling laugh. "Well, I'll be damned. Looks like I need to start clearing out some space in my woodshop. A baby needs a proper, sturdy cradle."
Margaret didn't say a word at first. She simply reached out and gently squeezed Nora’s hand, her sharp eyes glistening with rare, genuine tears.

"You built a real, beautiful home here, Nora," Margaret whispered softly, her voice thick with emotion. "You broke the cycle. Your child is going to grow up completely surrounded by love, without ever knowing the shadows you had to fight."
Nora looked around the noisy, celebrating diner. She saw Lily smiling brilliantly, she saw Tommy raising a coffee mug in a toast, and she felt the absolute, unshakeable warmth of Elias’s hand in hers. The toxic, cold bloodline of the Sterling empire ended with her. A new legacy, built entirely on community, freedom, and love, was officially beginning.
