Chapter 26 - The Corporate Proxy

The aggressive pushback from Oakhaven did not go unnoticed by the corporate executives at Apex Holdings. Realizing that their checkbook diplomacy was failing, they sent their lead acquisitions director to handle the "rebellious locals" personally.
His name was Marcus Vance, a slick, impeccably tailored corporate shark who thrived on intimidation.
Vance walked into Nora’s bookstore on a rainy Thursday afternoon. He didn't browse the shelves; he marched directly to the counter where Nora was reviewing the latest trust expenditures.
"Eleanor Sterling, I presume," Vance sneered, his eyes sweeping over her simple wool sweater and jeans with obvious disdain. "Or do you insist on the quaint small-town persona of Nora?"
"My name is Nora," she replied smoothly, not looking up from her paperwork. "And unless you are planning to purchase a copy of Hemingway, you are currently loitering in a place of business."
Vance chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. He placed a heavy, leather-bound legal briefcase on the counter.
"Your little stunt with the agricultural grants was mildly amusing, Ms. Sterling," Vance said, leaning forward aggressively. "But it is ultimately futile. Apex Holdings is a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate. We have deeper pockets than your mother's trust fund. You cannot outspend us in a prolonged war of attrition."
Nora finally set her pen down. She looked up, her dark eyes completely flat and devoid of fear.
"I don't need to outspend you, Mr. Vance," Nora stated, her voice dropping to a dangerously calm register. "I simply need to outsmart you. A task that is proving to be remarkably easy."
Vance’s smug smile faltered slightly. "What exactly do you mean by that?"
Nora reached under the counter and pulled out a single, stamped legal document, sliding it across the wood toward him.

"While you were busy trying to bribe farmers for their pastures, my legal team was busy purchasing the commercial access rights to the only state-maintained highway that leads directly into the lower valley," Nora smiled a cold, brilliant smile. "I now own the commercial easement. Your luxury resort cannot legally transport building materials, construction equipment, or commercial guests down that road without my explicit, written permission. Which you will never, ever receive."
Vance stared at the document, the color completely draining from his face as he realized he had been checkmated by a bookseller.
