Chapter 38 - The Legacy of the Trust

With the town flourishing and her family safe, Nora realized that her final responsibility as the sole trustee of the Eleanor Trust was to ensure its permanence. She needed to legally guarantee that Oakhaven would be protected long after she was gone.
She arranged a private meeting with her lead attorney, the sharp, independent lawyer who had helped her defeat Apex Holdings years ago.
They sat in the quiet back office of the town hall, reviewing a massive stack of complex legal documents.
"I want the trust entirely decentralized from my personal estate," Nora instructed, tapping the paperwork. "I want it restructured into an irrevocable, localized community endowment board. It must be managed collectively by the sitting mayor, the head physician of the clinic, and the director of the educational center."
The lawyer adjusted his glasses, looking at the structural diagrams.
"That is a highly unusual setup, Nora. You are essentially surrendering absolute, unilateral control of hundreds of millions of dollars to a local committee," he warned.
"That is exactly the point," Nora stated firmly. "Wealth concentrated in the hands of one person inevitably breeds corruption and paranoia. I learned that from my father. I want the money locked into the infrastructure of this town. It will strictly fund the library, the clinic, the school, and agricultural disaster relief. It cannot be used for commercial investment or corporate trading."
"It's ironclad," the lawyer admitted, signing off on the final clause. "The Sterling corporate board couldn't crack this trust even if they spent the next century trying."
"Good," Nora smiled, a deep, resonant peace settling over her.
