Chapter 21 - The Unexpected Arrival

|

The rain was coming down in relentless, freezing sheets, turning the streets of Oakhaven into slick, dark rivers. Nora was just turning the deadbolt on the bookstore’s front door when she saw a shadow moving near the alleyway.

She squinted through the rain-streaked glass. It was a young girl, no older than eighteen, shivering violently under a thin, soaked denim jacket. She was clutching a small, battered duffel bag to her chest as if her life depended on it.

Nora felt a sudden, sharp ache in her chest. She recognized that posture immediately. It was the terrified, hyper-vigilant stance of someone who was running from a monster.

Nora unlocked the door and pushed it open, the wind howling around her.

"Hey!" Nora called out over the storm. "Come inside! You’re going to freeze to death out there!"

The girl flinched, looking at Nora with wide, panicked eyes like a cornered animal. For a second, Nora thought she was going to bolt back into the darkness.

"I'm not going to hurt you," Nora promised, her voice softening into a gentle, commanding warmth. "I have hot tea and a dry blanket. Just come inside out of the rain."

Slowly, hesitantly, the girl stepped out of the shadows and walked into the warm, softly lit bookstore. She stood dripping on the hardwood floor, looking around the cozy space with absolute disbelief.

"I don't have any money," the girl whispered, her teeth chattering. "I can't pay you for anything."

"I didn't ask for money," Nora said quietly, locking the door behind her and pulling the blinds down. She walked over to the small kitchenette in the back and grabbed a thick, wool blanket, wrapping it gently around the girl’s trembling shoulders.

"What is your name?" Nora asked, handing her a steaming mug of chamomile tea.

"Lily," the girl breathed, taking the mug with shaking hands.

"Well, Lily, my name is Nora," she smiled warmly, pulling up a chair. "And you are completely safe here. No one is going to find you in these mountains."

Lily looked down at her tea, a single tear mixing with the raindrops on her face. Nora didn't ask who she was running from. She didn't need to. She simply picked up her phone and texted Elias to bring over some hot soup from the diner. The cycle of sanctuary had officially begun.
