Chapter 12 - The Foundation

The decision to accept the inheritance was not made lightly. Nora spent weeks consulting with a fiercely independent lawyer recommended by Silas, ensuring that the funds could be completely severed from any Sterling corporate oversight.
Once the money was secured in a private account under her new legal name, Nora set to work.
Oakhaven was a beautiful town, but it was isolated, and its infrastructure was aging. The local library was struggling to keep its doors open, the community center roof leaked, and the small medical clinic desperately needed updated equipment.
Nora didn't announce her wealth. She quietly established the 'Eleanor Trust,' named after her mother, and began funneling the money into the town anonymously through Silas’s lawyer.
The library received a massive, anonymous donation that not only fixed the roof but doubled their operating budget for the next decade. The clinic mysteriously received a shipment of state-of-the-art diagnostic machines.
"It's a miracle, is what it is," Martha declared one Sunday at the diner, serving a fresh pot of coffee. "Someone out there is looking out for Oakhaven."
Nora caught Elias’s eye across the booth. He winked at her, taking a sip of his coffee.
"It's nice to see the town getting what it deserves," Nora said mildly, stirring sugar into her mug.
"It is," Margaret agreed, sitting beside Nora. She looked closely at the younger woman, her sharp eyes missing nothing. "Though I suspect miracles often have a lot of quiet, hard work behind them."
Nora smiled, but didn't confirm or deny the suspicion.
Later that afternoon, Nora and Elias were walking through the woods behind his cabin.
"You know Margaret suspects you," Elias pointed out, stepping over a fallen log.
"Margaret suspects everyone of everything," Nora laughed. "But she won't say anything. She understands the value of a quiet life."
"Are you happy, Nora?" Elias asked, stopping and turning to face her. "With how you're using it?"
May you like
"I am," Nora said honestly, looking up at the canopy of pine needles. "For the first time, that money isn't a chain. It's a tool. I'm building a home, Elias."
He smiled, pulling her close. "You already built one. Now you're just decorating it."
