Chapter 35 - A Letter to the Past

|

With her new role as Mayor securing her permanent, public place in the world, Nora realized there was one final, lingering thread that needed to be definitively severed.

Late one evening, she sat alone in the small office above the bookstore. The town was asleep, quiet and peaceful.

She opened her laptop and drafted a highly secure, encrypted email directly to the primary executive board of the Sterling Holding Corporation. She didn't use a lawyer this time. She spoke directly as herself.

To the Board of Directors,

Ten years ago, I walked away from this empire because I recognized that it was built on a foundation of exploitation, cruelty, and unyielding control. Arthur Sterling believed that money could purchase absolute compliance. He died alone, surrounded by sycophants, proving that his philosophy was ultimately hollow.

I am writing this not to negotiate, nor to threaten. I am writing to establish an absolute, permanent boundary. The Eleanor Trust is legally, irrevocably shielded from any corporate oversight. The funds have been permanently dispersed into localized, unbreakable community endowments that you cannot legally touch.

Do not look for me. Do not look for my husband. Do not look for my daughter. We exist in a world that your money cannot penetrate. If any representative of the Sterling Corporation ever attempts to cross the borders of my town, I will not hesitate to legally and publicly dismantle the remaining reputation of your company using the heavily encrypted files I still possess.

Consider this the final communication you will ever receive from the Sterling bloodline. The legacy ends with me.

Nora.

She hit send, watching the email vanish into the digital ether.

She then took the physical copy of the original trust documents Arthur had tried to use to control her, walked over to the small stone fireplace, and tossed the papers directly into the roaring flames.

Nora stood there, watching the heavy parchment curl, blacken, and turn completely to ash. The smoke drifted harmlessly up the chimney, disappearing into the cold night sky.

It was absolute, perfect closure. The ghost of Arthur Sterling was permanently exorcised from her life.
