Chapter 34 - The Oath of Office

The swearing-in ceremony was held on a brilliant, sunny morning on the grand stone steps of the Oakhaven Town Hall. The entire community had turned out to celebrate, creating a festive, joyous atmosphere in the square.
Nora stood at the podium, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit—a subtle, powerful nod to her corporate upbringing, but softened by a handmade silver necklace Elias had crafted for her.
Elias stood solidly beside her, holding a bouncing, excited five-year-old Hazel in his arms.
The retiring Mayor Harrison stepped forward holding a weathered Bible. Nora placed her hand firmly on the book, raising her right hand.
"I, Nora Sterling, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of Mayor of Oakhaven," Nora repeated clearly, her voice carrying across the silent, attentive crowd. "And I will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the peace, the integrity, and the absolute independence of this community."
As she finished the oath, the crowd erupted into a massive, thunderous cheer.
Nora stepped up to the microphone to deliver her inaugural address. She looked out over the sea of faces, recognizing the mechanic, the baker, the retired teacher, and the young apprentice who now ran her bookstore.
"Ten years ago, I arrived in this town lost, terrified, and running from a world that measured a person’s worth entirely by their bank account," Nora spoke, her voice filled with deep, resonant emotion. "Oakhaven did not ask for my resume. You did not ask for my net worth. You simply asked if I needed a warm cup of coffee and a safe place to rest."
She smiled, looking at Elias and Hazel.
