Chapter 33 - The Mayoral Nomination

|
Five years passed in a blur of peaceful, joyous routine. Hazel grew into a bright, fiercely independent little girl who loved hiking the mountain trails with Elias and organizing books by color to intentionally annoy Margaret.
The town of Oakhaven continued to thrive, largely due to the careful, anonymous investments of the Eleanor Trust. The library was fully modernized, the educational center was producing certified mechanics and nurses, and the local economy was booming without losing its rustic, small-town charm.
The tranquility shifted slightly when Mayor Harrison, who had faithfully served the town for twenty years, announced his official retirement due to declining health.
A special town council meeting was immediately called to discuss the upcoming election.
Nora attended the meeting at the community center, sitting in the back row with Elias, expecting a boring debate about local zoning laws.
Instead, Silas stood up, leaning heavily on his wooden cane, and walked to the microphone.
"We need a new mayor," Silas announced, his gruff voice echoing in the hall. "We need someone who understands how to protect this town from the corporate vultures that are always circling the valley. We need someone who understands finance, but more importantly, someone who loves these mountains as much as we do."
Silas turned his gaze directly to the back of the room, looking straight at Nora.
"I officially nominate Nora Sterling," Silas declared loudly.
The entire community center erupted into immediate, enthusiastic applause. People turned in their seats, nodding vigorously in agreement.
Nora’s eyes widened in genuine panic. She stood up quickly. "Silas, no. I am not a politician. I run a bookstore!"
"You aren't a politician, Nora," Martha countered from the front row, standing up to support the nomination. "You are a protector. When that luxury resort company tried to pave over the lower valley, you didn't back down. You fought for us. That is exactly what this town needs."
"I don't have the experience," Nora argued weakly, looking at Elias for support.
Elias just smiled, wrapping his arm proudly around her waist. "They know exactly who you are, Nora. And they trust you."
The room quieted down, waiting for her response. Nora looked at the hopeful, earnest faces of the people who had saved her life when she was nothing but a broken girl running from a ghost.
She took a deep breath, stepping away from the wall.

"I accept the nomination," Nora said clearly.
The applause was deafening. She ran unopposed and was officially elected the following month.
