Chapter 27 - The Checkmate

|

Vance’s face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. He slammed his hand onto the bookstore counter, rattling a display of antique bookmarks.

"This is illegal!" Vance shouted, losing all his polished corporate composure. "You are deliberately obstructing interstate commerce! Our legal department will tie you up in federal litigation for the next decade! We will drain your trust fund with exorbitant legal fees until you are forced to surrender the easement!"

Nora didn't flinch. She simply leaned back, crossing her arms over her chest, watching his meltdown with a look of mild, clinical amusement.

"You are more than welcome to try, Mr. Vance," Nora replied evenly. "But before you call your lawyers, you should carefully read page four of that document."

Vance frantically flipped through the heavy parchment pages. His eyes rapidly scanned the dense legal text, his breathing becoming shallow and erratic.

"My legal team didn't just purchase the commercial access rights," Nora explained, her voice echoing clearly in the quiet shop. "We formally invoked a century-old, localized environmental conservation easement that officially designates the surrounding old-growth forest as a protected ecological sanctuary. By federal law, you cannot build a commercial structure exceeding two stories, nor can you pave a parking lot larger than a standard driveway within a five-mile radius of that protected zone."

"You... you sabotaged the entire zoning matrix," Vance whispered, utterly defeated.

"I permanently sterilized the land for commercial development," Nora corrected him sharply. "Your luxury resort is legally impossible to build. Your corporate board just wasted millions of dollars surveying a property they can never use. Now, I suggest you take your briefcase and leave my town before I have Silas and his friends tow your luxury car into the ravine."

Vance stared at her, recognizing the terrifying, ruthless intellect of Arthur Sterling looking back at him from her eyes. But unlike Arthur, Nora wasn't using her power to destroy lives; she was using it to build an impenetrable fortress around her home.

Without another word, Vance snatched the document, turned on his expensive leather heels, and practically sprinted out of the bookstore.

The bell above the door chimed cheerfully. Nora picked up her pen, smiled to herself, and went back to reviewing her paperwork. Apex Holdings officially withdrew their project proposals the very next morning. Oakhaven was permanently safe.
