Chapter 11 - The Inheritance

|

Summer in Oakhaven was a vibrant explosion of life. The days were long, filled with the hum of cicadas and the scent of pine. Nora had settled into a comfortable routine, balancing her time between the bookstore, helping Silas with his garden, and quiet evenings with Elias.

The peace, however, was broken on a Tuesday morning by a heavy, cream-colored envelope delivered to the bookstore.

It bore the unmistakable crest of the Sterling family's primary legal firm.

Nora stared at the letter resting on the wooden counter, her heart hammering a frantic, forgotten rhythm against her ribs.

Margaret noticed her sudden stillness. She walked over, wiping her hands on a cloth. "Nora? What is it?"

"It's from them," Nora whispered, picking up the envelope with trembling fingers.

She walked into the small back office and shut the door. She stared at the letter for ten minutes before finally finding the courage to break the wax seal.

It was not a threat, nor was it a demand for her return. It was a formal notification of inheritance.

Arthur Sterling, her estranged father, had passed away three weeks prior from a sudden stroke. The letter detailed that, despite his public disownment of her, a significant, untouchable trust fund established by her late mother had officially matured upon his death, making Nora the sole beneficiary.

It was an astronomical sum of money.

Nora sat down heavily in the worn office chair. She felt no grief for the man who had treated her as property, but the sheer weight of the inheritance was suffocating. It represented the very world she had fled—a world of leverage, expectation, and control.

Elias arrived at the bookstore an hour later. Margaret immediately sent him to the back office.

"Nora?" Elias asked softly, stepping inside. He saw the letter on the desk and her pale face. "Are you okay?"

"He's dead," Nora said, her voice hollow. "Arthur is dead."

Elias walked over and knelt beside her chair, taking her hands. "I'm so sorry."

"I'm not," Nora admitted, the truth surprising even herself. "But... he left me something. Or rather, my mother did, and his death unlocked it."

She handed him the letter. Elias read it quickly, his eyes widening slightly at the figures, before looking back at her.

"What do you want to do?" he asked, not pushing, simply offering a steady presence.

"I don't want it," Nora said fiercely. "I don't want anything that connects me to that name. I want to burn the check."

"Then we burn it," Elias agreed without hesitation.

Nora looked at him, realizing the profound depth of his support. He didn't care about the money; he only cared about her peace.

"But..." Nora hesitated, a new thought forming in her mind. "If I burn it, it just goes back into the Sterling estate. To the board members who enabled him."

"So, what's the alternative?"

"We use it," Nora decided, a fierce, protective light returning to her eyes. "We use it to build something here. Something Arthur would have hated."
