Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Maternity Ward|

By 2:00 AM, the emergency medication had finally managed to slow my contractions.

Dr. Hargrove completed another ultrasound and let out a long sigh of relief.

“The placenta is intact, Mrs. Vance,” he announced softly. “Your baby girl is a fighter. But you are going to remain on strict bed rest under twenty-four-hour observation.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” I whispered, pressing my hands over my belly.

Shortly after the medical team stepped out, Detective Lena Ortiz entered my room. She was a middle-aged woman with sharp, observant eyes, carrying a worn notepad.

She dragged a chair over to the side of my bed and sat down quietly.

“Mrs. Vance, I’m Detective Ortiz,” she introduced herself. “I’ve reviewed the initial report, but I need your official statement regarding Odalys Crane.”

I walked her through every single second of the attack—the separation papers, the belt, the threats regarding the fake psychiatric evaluation, and Silas’s shell company, Kade Capital.

Ortiz took meticulous notes.

“How did Mrs. Crane get onto this floor?” Ortiz asked. “The maternity wing requires high-level electronic security clearance.”

“She had my husband’s executive key,” I replied coldly. “He was given one when Vance Dynamics funded the hospital’s new imaging wing.”

Ortiz nodded slowly, writing something down.

“We recovered a leather belt with blood residue from the bathroom, as well as the unsigned divorce documents from the trash bin. That corroborates your story.”

“Then why haven't you arrested her?” I demanded.

Ortiz hesitated, tapping her pen against her chin.

“Because we just pulled the electronic door log for your room during the forty-two minutes you were locked inside,” Ortiz revealed quietly. “Mrs. Crane’s key wasn't the only one that accessed this room.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“The electronic lock registered three separate entries,” Ortiz explained, leaning closer. “The first was Mrs. Crane using your husband’s key. The second was your husband’s key again, seven minutes later.”

My stomach dropped.

“Silas was here?”

“And the third entry,” Ortiz added, her voice dropping to a whisper, “belonged to the master administrative key of Dr. Edwin Kessler—the Chairman of the Hospital Board and a close personal business partner of your husband.”

Cold horror washed over my entire body.

Dr. Kessler had been inside my room. He had used his master key while Odalys was beating me.

He hadn't been trying to stop her.

He had been hiding in the private bathroom, watching the entire attack to ensure I surrendered my rights to Vance Dynamics.
