The floor beneath our feet shuddered as the breaching charges detonated on the ground level. Alarms began to blare throughout the building, red emergency strobe lights painting the executive suite in blood-colored light.
"We can't hold this floor against twenty men, Dad!" I shouted over the blaring sirens, cradling Maya against my chest inside her protective carrier.
"We don't have to hold it," Dad replied, pulling a heavy tactical remote from his belt. "We just have to make them think we’re trapped."
He pressed a sequence on the remote. High above us, the emergency ceiling hatches of the executive suite opened, dropping heavy steel tactical cables into the lobby.
"The rooftop?" I asked, incredulous. "They control the ground! We’ll be sitting ducks on the roof!"
"Not if our ride is already here," Dad smiled grimly.
A deafening roar filled the air outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. A heavy, unmarked black military helicopter hovered directly outside the 50th-floor balcony, its searchlights blinding us through the glass.
The side door of the helicopter slid open, revealing my father's elite personal reserve unit—men who had served with him decades ago, armed to the teeth and ready for war.
"You called in the old guard?" I asked, a disbelieving laugh escaping my lips despite the danger.

"I never leave home without a contingency plan, Mara," Dad said, pulling a glass-cutter tool from his kit and creating a rapid break line on the floor-to-ceiling glass window.
He kicked the heavy glass panel outward. It shattered into thousands of tiny pieces, falling into the abyss of the London night. The freezing wind rushed into the room, howling like a wild beast.
