Chapter 32 - Skyward Escape

|

"Clip in!" Dad roared over the deafening sound of the helicopter blades and the roaring wind.

He attached a heavy steel harness around my waist, double-checking the locks securing Maya’s bulletproof capsule to my chest.

Down in the executive hallway, the heavy steel doors burst open. Gabriel’s mercenaries poured into the room, raising their rifles and opening fire instantly.

Bullets tore through the leather furniture and shattered the remaining glass panels around us.

Marcus turned, firing his tactical rifle with one hand while holding my harness lead with the other. "Go! Go! Go!"

The winch on the helicopter engaged, pulling me and Maya out into the cold night air, dangling hundreds of feet above the glowing London streets.

I held onto the harness straps for dear life, wrapping my body around Maya’s capsule to protect her from the wind. Below us, the glass tower looked like a burning spire of light.

Marcus clipped his own harness into the line just as a rocket-propelled grenade whizzed past the balcony, exploding harmlessly against the concrete ceiling of the 50th floor.

The winch lifted Dad into the cabin of the helicopter right behind us. Strong hands pulled us inside, slamming the heavy side door shut.

"Status!" Dad ordered, wiping rain and sweat from his face.

"Target location confirmed, Sovereign Osei," the pilot announced over the comms. "The signal Mara traced is live at the Thames Penthouse. We have eyes on the ground."

Dad looked back at me, his face set in stone. "It's time to end this, Mara. Once and for all."
