Chapter 39 - The Legacy of Sovereign

The afternoon passed in blissful tranquility. We talked about normal things—family memories, plans for Maya’s nursery, and how Dad was going to teach her how to sail when she was older.

For the first time in my life, I felt a profound, unbroken sense of peace. The heavy weight that had rested on my shoulders for years seemed to evaporate in the warm summer breeze.

Around 4:00 PM, a delivery truck pulled up to the outer gate of the estate.

Dad stood up, stretching his arms. "That’ll be the new security cameras I ordered for the perimeter fence. I’ll go sign for them."

"Dad, we have guards for that," I laughed softly.

"I like to keep busy, my girl," he grinned, winking at me before walking down the veranda steps toward the front driveway.

I leaned back in my chair, taking a slow sip of my tea, watching Maya sleep.

A quiet chime sounded from my lap.

I looked down. It wasn't my personal phone or my corporate tablet. It was an old, encrypted satellite communicator Dad had left sitting on the side table beside his tea mug.

The screen lit up with a notification.

A single new message had arrived, routed through an automated relay server set to trigger thirty days after Gabriel Vance’s arrest.

My eyebrows furrowed. I picked up the small device and tapped the glowing screen.
