Chapter 25 - The Wolf in the Dark

The sub-basement was cold, silent, and illuminated only by the faint green lights of the air filtration system. I sat on the edge of the reinforced steel cot, nursing Maya in the quiet room while monitoring the house's internal thermal cameras on a tactical tablet.
On the screen, I watched my father work.
Marcus Osei wasn't just a former intelligence officer; he was a legend for a reason. Through the infrared lens, I saw three heavily armed mercenaries clad in active camouflage breach the ground floor terrace. They moved like professionals, sweeping every corner with silent, deadly precision.
They didn't see Marcus standing in the shadow of the grand staircase.
He moved like a phantom. The first mercenary fell before he even realized Marcus was behind him—a swift, silent strike to the neck that dropped him instantly. Dad caught the man’s rifle before it hit the floor, preventing any sound from echoing through the house.
"One down," I whispered into my comms earbud. "Two coming through the main foyer, Dad. Left flank."
"Copy that, sweetheart," Dad’s voice came back, calm and steady as if he were discussing the weather. "Keep Maya warm."
Through the camera, I watched the remaining two mercenaries freeze. They realized their point man had vanished. One of them pulled a thermobaric grenade from his vest.
"Dad, he’s got heavy explosives!" I warned, my heart leaping into my throat.
Before the mercenary could pull the pin, Marcus stepped out from the shadows directly behind him. A single, suppressed shot echoed through the comms. The mercenary collapsed.

The last remaining operative turned, firing a wild burst of automatic fire into the darkness.
I held my breath, terror seizing my chest as the thermal camera bloomed with muzzle flashes.
