I didn't turn around. I pulled open the door and stepped out into the hallway, leaving Ethan standing alone in the stark fluorescence of the interrogation room.

Logan was waiting for me near the exit doors, holding his truck keys. He looked at my face, saw the absolute finality written in my eyes, and didn't ask a single question. He simply put his arm around my shoulder and walked me out of the building into the cool morning air.

The sun was just beginning to rise over Puget Sound, casting orange and pink light across the dark waters. The rain had finally stopped.

When the truck stopped, the cabin front door opened. Logan's wife stepped out onto the porch, holding Lily, while Noah came running down the wooden steps, his tiny boots pounding against the gravel.

"Mommy!" Noah cried, waving his little hands.

I fell to my knees on the damp grass as Noah ran into my arms. I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him close, burying my face in his soft hair as Lily was handed down to me.

I held both of my children tightly, crying silent tears of exhaustion and grief, but feeling, for the first time in six months, the steady ground beneath my feet.
