Chapter 14 - The Crash Reinvestigated

Agent Chen stepped out to the front porch to answer the call, her face growing increasingly solemn as she listened to the speaker.
When she walked back into the living room, her eyes met mine with a look of deep concern.
"Agent Chen? What is it?" I asked, setting my tea down.
"That was the Idaho State Police forensic accident reconstruction team," Agent Chen said slowly, taking a seat opposite us. "They just completed a second review of the crash scene that took your husband's life four days before you gave birth."
My heart did a sudden, violent flip in my chest. "Ethan’s crash? They said a drunk driver crossed the center line..."
"The driver who struck Ethan’s truck was a man named James Hayes," Agent Chen explained. "He died at the scene. But forensic analysis of Hayes's vehicle computer showed something disturbing."
Logan sat up straight, his military instinct instantly triggered. "What did they find?"
"Hayes’s vehicle didn't drift accidentally," Agent Chen revealed, her voice dropping into a grave hush. "His steering inputs were intentionally locked straight, and his accelerator was fully depressed three seconds before impact. Furthermore, Hayes’s bank records show a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars deposited into his account twelve hours before the crash."
Tears welled in my eyes as cold horror rushed through my veins.
"Ethan wasn't killed by a random drunk driver," I whispered, my voice trembling violently. "He was murdered."
"It was an assassination," Logan growled, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists. "Who sent the wire transfer, Agent Chen?!"

Agent Chen pulled a printed bank statement from her folder.
"The wire originated from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands," she said. "An account registered under the name of Denise Bell—your mother."
