Chapter 2 - The Arrest in Room 412

|

The reinforced wooden door of Room 412 crashed open with a deafening bang.

Four uniformed hospital security officers swept into the room, followed immediately by three armed Boise police officers with flashlights and drawn weapons.

"Police! Nobody move!" an officer shouted, his voice echoing off the sterile walls. "Put the child down immediately!"

Mark froze, his face draining of all color as he held newborn Noah in his arms. Carla let out a sharp shriek, backing up against the wall while Denise grabbed my father’s sleeve in pure panic.

"Officer, there’s been a misunderstanding!" my father blustered, trying to straighten his jacket. "This is a private family matter! My daughter is hysterical from postpartum depression—"

"Shut your mouth and step away from the bassinet!" the lead officer barked, stepping directly between my father and my bed.

A tall man in a tailored dark blue suit pushed through the officers. It was Thomas Sterling, Ethan’s senior estate attorney. He carried a leather briefcase and a certified court document in his hand.

"Officer," Thomas said, his voice cold and steady, "I hold a temporary protective restraining order signed by Judge Vance three days ago, specifically naming Richard Bell, Denise Bell, and Mark Bell. They are legally barred from coming within five hundred feet of Mrs. Clara Walker or her children."

"He's lying!" my mother screamed. "That’s my grandson!"

A female officer gently took Noah from Mark’s trembling hands. The baby was crying softly, but unharmed. She carefully laid him back beside his sister Lily, checking his blanket before stepping back to guard the bassinet.

"Mark Bell, Richard Bell, Denise Bell, and Carla Bell," the lead officer declared, pulling heavy metal handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for felony burglary, child endangerment, assault, and violation of a protective order."

"Clara! Tell them to stop!" my father roared as an officer shoved him against the wall, clicking the handcuffs tightly around his wrists. "You stupid brat! We're your blood! You can't do this to your own father!"

I looked at him from my hospital bed, wiping a tear from my bruised cheek. My voice was quiet, but it carried across the silent room.

"Ethan warned you, Dad," I whispered. "You don't own me anymore."

As the officers dragged my screaming family down the hallway in front of shocked nurses and patients, Thomas Sterling walked over to my bedside. He looked down at me with deep sympathy and offered a small, reassuring nod.

"They won't touch you again, Clara," Thomas said softly. "Ethan made sure of it."
