Chapter 13 - The Unraveling Syndicate

|

By daybreak, the estate was surrounded by dozens of federal emergency vehicles, state patrol cruisers, and FBI mobile command units.

Special Agent Sarah Chen of the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division sat in our dining room, reviewing the leather-bound ledger Thomas had handed over.

"This ledger gives us everything we need, Mrs. Walker," Agent Chen said, her expression grim but satisfied. "It links Richard Bell, Victor Vance, and three local shell companies to a multi-state money-laundering operation."

"What about my father?" I asked, sitting beside Logan with a warm cup of tea.

"Federal agents served an arrest warrant at the county jail two hours ago," Agent Chen revealed. "Your father is being transferred to a federal maximum-security facility. With these records and the recorded hospital assault, he is looking at thirty years to life without parole."

"And Victor Vance?" Logan asked.

"Victor Vance was apprehended at the Boise airfield forty minutes ago trying to board a private jet to the Bahamas," Agent Chen added with a faint smile. "His assets have been frozen by federal court order."

I leaned back against the sofa, letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding for weeks.

The threat that had hung over Ethan and me for years was finally collapsing. My greedy, abusive family had tried to crush a grieving widow, but instead, their own greed had dismantled their entire criminal empire.

"You did it, Clara," Thomas Sterling said softly, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Ethan would be so proud of you."

I looked down at Lily and Noah sleeping peacefully in their double stroller. They were safe now. The fortress Ethan built had held strong.

Or so I thought—until Agent Chen’s phone buzzed with an urgent call from the state forensic lab.
