Chapter 27 - The Breach at Bellevue

|
The heavy wooden door of Room 204 splintered inward with a deafening crash.
Two men in tactical gear smashed through the frame, suppressed submachine guns raised. Logan didn't hesitate. He fired two sharp shots, hitting the first mercenary in the center chest, sending him falling back into the corridor.
"Get down!" Ethan screamed, lunging forward and tackling me to the carpet just as a spray of bullets tore through the drywall above our heads, shower of plaster dust raining down upon us.
Ethan drew his pistol from his waistband, rolling onto his back and firing three rapid rounds through the shattered doorway. The second attacker collapsed into the hallway, his weapon clattering across the floorboards.
"They aren't here to capture us!" Logan shouted, reloading his magazine with practiced speed. "That was a kill squad!"
"Arthur knows we have the hard drive!" Ethan said, pulling me up by my arm. "Clara, look at me. I swear on Noah and Lily’s lives, everything I did was to keep you safe from your father. I will explain everything, but if we don't leave this room in the next thirty seconds, none of us will survive the night!"
I looked at Ethan’s desperate eyes. The anger inside me burned bright, but survival instincts took over.
"Where do we go?" I demanded, wiping dust from my face.
"The service chute behind the server rack," Ethan said, rushing to the back wall and pulling open a heavy stainless-steel door disguised as an air vent. "It leads directly to the laundry dock."

"Logan, go first!" I ordered.
"Not a chance, Clara. You and Ethan get down there. I'll cover the rear," Logan insisted, keeping his weapon trained on the silent corridor.
