Chapter 37 - The Web of Lies

"You put my name on an illegal syndicate account linked to Victor Vance!" I cried, shaking my head in disbelief. "If the FBI hadn't intercepted that drive tonight, I would be facing thirty years in federal prison right now!"

"I controlled the key, Clara!" Ethan yelled back, his eyes wild with emotion. "I was never going to let the FBI see that file unless I was dead! I was trying to secure your future!"

"You were playing God with my life!" I slammed my fist against the metal door behind me. "Just like my father did! You brought me into your dirty corporate war, made me grieve for six months, lied to my face in my own home, and called it protection!"

Ethan sank back into his chair, covering his face with his hands. Heavy silence fell over the room, broken only by the quiet sound of my ragged breathing.

"I loved you, Clara," Ethan whispered through his fingers, his voice sounding hollow, defeated. "Everything I became... every terrible choice I made... was because I couldn't bear the thought of losing you or the kids."

"Love doesn't build a life out of wiretaps and forged bank accounts, Ethan," I said softly, wiping the wet tears from my cheeks. "You said you came home today. But the man I married six years ago... he never came back from Boise."

I turned my back on him and reached for the door handle.

"Clara, please!" Ethan called out, his chair scraping loudly against the floor as he stood up. "Don't walk out that door!"
