Chapter 22 - Unlocking the Mahogany Box

We ushered Ethan inside, locking the heavy double doors behind us. In the study, Ethan stood motionless for a moment, taking in the room as if he were a ghost inspecting his former life. Gently, he walked over to Noah and Lily. Tears spilled over his lashes as he knelt, cradling Noah's head in his hand and pressing a gentle kiss to Lily's forehead.
"They grew so much," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling.
"They missed their father," I said, stepping beside him. "Even if they didn't fully understand where you went."
Logan stood near the door, his arms crossed over his chest.
"You've got a lot of explaining to do, Ethan," Logan said. "Starting with that mahogany box on the desk. What's inside?"
Ethan stood up and approached the desk, picking up the heavy box. He turned the brass dials on the combination lock with practiced precision: 0-5-1-8. The date of our wedding anniversary. With a quiet click, the latch popped open.
Inside, resting on black velvet, was a high-capacity encrypted hard drive, a set of keys, and a thick leather ledger bound in gold thread.
"This is the shadow ledger," Ethan said, his tone darkening. "Your father, Arthur Walker, spent fifteen years building a secondary financial network under Vance Global. Every bribe paid to federal judges, every illegal weapons contract, and every hit placed on corporate whistleblowers is documented in this book."
I felt a chill run down my spine.

"My father... he authorized all of it?" I asked softly, hating the truth even as I heard it.
"Arthur didn't just authorize it, Clara," Ethan replied, looking into my eyes. "He was the architect. Victor Vance was just his muscle. And that keycard in your hand? It holds the decryption keys we need to send them both to prison for the rest of their lives."
