Chapter 35 - The Third File

Sterling opened the blue folder and slid a printed document across the steel table toward me.
It was a bank record from a private institution in Zurich, dated just three weeks ago—months after Ethan was supposed to have been completely isolated in protective federal custody.
"What is this?" I asked, my brows furrowing.
"When we decrypted the final partition of the hard drive Ethan provided, we found an automated wire transfer," Sterling explained quietly. "Five million dollars was moved from Victor Vance's private operational account into a blind trust registered under the name Clara Walker."
I looked up, stunned.
"I never opened a trust in Zurich! I don't know anything about this money!"
"We know you don't," Sterling said softly. "The signature on the trust setup wasn't yours, Clara. It was Ethan's. He forged your power of attorney six weeks ago while he was recovering in Idaho."
"Why?" Logan demanded, leaning over the table. "Why would he transfer stolen syndicate money into my sister's name?"
"Because if Ethan's plan failed tonight," Sterling said gravely, "and Arthur took back control, the paper trail was set up to make Clara look like the true mastermind who orchestrated the Boise crash to steal Victor's offshore funds. Ethan gave himself a clean federal immunity deal, while leaving a golden parachute—or a fall-guy trap—tied directly to Clara."

A cold, sickening weight settled into my stomach. My breath caught in my throat.
I looked through the two-way mirror at Ethan. He was sitting alone in the dark room, staring at his hands, waiting for me.
