Chapter 17 - The Highway Pursuit

|
"Agent Chen! We have her location!" Logan shouted into his comms radio, reading the real-time GPS coordinates blinking on the screen. "She’s heading south on Interstate 84 toward the Utah border!"
Within ninety seconds, two FBI pursuit vehicles and Logan’s armored SUV were speeding down the mountain road, sirens screaming into the wind.
I sat in the passenger seat of Logan’s SUV, holding Ethan’s handwritten letter tight against my chest while Agent Chen coordinated the roadblock ahead with the Idaho State Police.
"State patrol has set up a spike strip at Mile Marker 42," Agent Chen reported over the radio. "All southbound lanes are closed!"
Twenty minutes later, the silver sedan carrying Denise appeared on the highway ahead, weaving dangerously through traffic at over ninety miles per hour.
"She’s not stopping!" Logan warned, gripping the steering wheel as we closed the gap.
Ahead, three state patrol cruisers formed a barricade across the highway lanes.
Denise’s driver spotted the barricade at the last second, slamming on the brakes. The silver sedan skidded wildly across the rain-slicked asphalt, spinning two full circles before crashing heavily into the steel guardrail on the side of the highway.
Engine steam poured from the crumpled hood.
FBI agents and state troopers swarmed the vehicle with drawn weapons.
"Driver! Step out of the vehicle with your hands up!" an officer ordered through a megaphone.
The driver’s door opened, and a bruised hired driver stepped out, raising his hands in defeat.
Agent Chen and two troopers approached the rear passenger door, throwing it open.

Denise was pulled from the back seat, coughing and disheveled, her expensive coat torn and covered in dust.
As the troopers forced her to her knees and clicked heavy steel handcuffs behind her back, I stepped out of Logan’s SUV and walked up to her.
