Chapter 12 - The Stand at the Closet

I backed deeper into the steel safe room, pulling the heavy door closed until only a tiny sliver remained open. Lily started to cry softly, terrified by the cold darkness.
"Shh, sweet baby," I whispered frantically, rocking her against my chest while keeping my body shielded over Noah.
Through the crack, I saw the masked mercenary raise his heavy boot, kicking the master closet door off its hinges.
"Where is the ledger?!" the man barked into his shoulder radio. "Search the study!"
Suddenly, Logan appeared from the hallway shadows behind the mercenary like a phantom.
Logan grabbed the man’s rifle barrel, twisting it violently upward as a shot went off into the drywall ceiling. Logan landed a sharp, devastating knee to the mercenary’s ribs, slamming him against the wall frame until the weapon clattered onto the floor.
The two men crashed into the closet door frame in a frantic struggle.
Logan managed to throw the mercenary over his shoulder, driving him onto the hardwood floor with a bone-crushing impact. Logan pinned him down, securing him with plastic zip-ties before reaching for his fallen tactical radio.
Logan pressed the talk button, his voice low and dangerous.
"Your lead guy is down," Logan said into the radio speaker. "And Boise PD SWAT is three minutes away. Throw your weapons down or leave in body bags."
Outside, heavy police sirens began to wail down the mountain road, growing louder with every second.
The remaining mercenaries panicked, sprinting back down the stairs and escaping out the shattered rear patio doors into the dark woods.
Logan rushed to the safe room door, pulling it open fully.

"You okay, Clara?" he panted, wiped blood from a cut above his eye.
"We're safe," I whispered, tears of relief falling onto my babies' blankets. "We're safe."
