Chapter 6 - The Hidden Eye

The turning point came three weeks before the final confrontation. Ethan had been drinking, enraged by a minor discrepancy in the household budget. The argument escalated rapidly. He backed me into the kitchen counter, pulled a long carving knife from the wooden block, and pressed the flat of the blade against my cheek.

"I could end you," he whispered, his breath sour with scotch. "And the world would just think the crazy wife finally took her own life."

He didn't cut me that night, but the sheer, casual malice in his eyes triggered a fundamental shift within me. Fear crystallized into absolute, icy resolve. The next day, while Ethan was at the office, I hired a discreet private security technician.

Under the guise of updating our fire alarms, I had a hidden, legal security camera installed inside the casing of the kitchen smoke detector. It had a sweeping view of the entire room, capturing high-definition video and audio.

I programmed the device to remain dormant until it detected loud shouting or sudden, violent movement. Once triggered, it would immediately record and upload the encrypted footage directly to Liam’s secure cloud server. Ethan, convinced of his own invincibility and my utter helplessness, never even glanced at the ceiling. He had no idea that his most sacred sanctuary of abuse was now broadcasting to the enemy.
