Chapter 13 - The Investigator

Minutes later, the glass doors slid open, and a uniformed female police officer entered, accompanied by a seasoned hospital investigator. The officer rested her hand casually on her utility belt, assessing the tense room.
"We got a call about a suspected domestic assault," the officer said, looking between Liam and Ethan.
Ethan immediately shifted tactics. He smoothed his wrinkled suit jacket and adopted a tone of weary, tragic resignation. "Officers, I apologize for this misunderstanding. The doctor is overstepping. My wife... she has severe anxiety." He pointed a trembling finger at me. "She has episodes. She gets confused and thrashes around. Ask her psychiatrist, Dr. Aris. He'll confirm her history of self-harm."
The investigator pulled out a notepad. "Is this true, ma'am?"
I lay on the bed, my ribs screaming with every breath. Ethan glared at me, his eyes filled with a silent, terrifying threat. He was banking on my silence. He was certain that the battered, unconscious woman he had dragged in here was too broken to contradict him.
I swallowed the blood in my mouth. I opened my eyes fully and looked directly at the police officer.
"I don't have a psychiatrist," I whispered, my voice raspy but steady. "He invented him to discredit me."

Ethan scoffed loudly. "She’s delusional! She hit her head!"
I turned my gaze to Ethan, watching the panic rise in his chest. "Ask him about the kitchen camera."
