Chapter 18 - The Dawn Service

Dawn began to bleed through the hospital blinds, painting the room in pale, unforgiving gray. I was finally sitting upright, propped against a mountain of pillows. My ribs screamed in protest, but my mind had never been clearer.

Ethan was brought to the foot of my bed by the police officers. It was time for his transfer to county jail. His expensive suit was crumpled and torn, the left cuff stained with his own dried blood from where he had fought the security guards. He looked at the legal documents Chloe had placed on my tray table, then slowly looked up at me.

"You planned this," he whispered, his voice cracking. "You planned all of it."

I met his gaze, refusing to let him see me wince. "I planned to survive you."

Chloe tapped the three folders on the table. "The first folder is the board's resolution removing you from Apex. The second is the petition for divorce under the terms of your prenuptial agreement, which denies you any claim to property held by her trust. The third is the civil demand for repayment of the stolen funds."

Ethan’s face turned an ashen gray. "You can't do this. The house... the estate is mine."

"The house belongs to the trust," I corrected him softly. "You signed a revocable occupancy agreement two days before our wedding. You thought it was a tax form."

His arrogance broke into pure, unadulterated panic. "You can’t take everything!"

"I’m not taking anything," I replied. "I’m just taking back what was mine."
