Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

By our third anniversary, the perimeter of my world had shrunk to the size of our house. Ethan’s control was absolute and suffocating. He installed tracking software on my phone, demanding to know my location at all hours. He sold my car, insisting that his private driver could take me wherever I needed to go, effectively stripping away my ability to leave independently.
His most insidious tactic, however, was psychological. He systematically cut me off from my friends, spreading subtle rumors that I was struggling with my mental health. He controlled every dollar in our joint accounts, forcing me to ask for an allowance like a child.

When I tried to push back, he escalated his psychological warfare. He invented a fake psychiatrist. He began telling our mutual acquaintances that I was suffering from severe anxiety and paranoia, creating a preemptive narrative to discredit anything I might say. "She gets confused," he would whisper sadly at parties, playing the role of the devoted, long-suffering husband.
He was building an alibi. If I ever showed up with a black eye, it was because I was clumsy and unmedicated. If I ever cried for help, it was just an episode of hysteria. He believed that an isolated, supposedly unstable woman could never be a credible threat to a respected CEO. But while he was busy locking the doors of my golden cage, I was busy picking the locks of his financial empire.
