Chapter 15 - The Attorney Arrives

While the medical staff went to work documenting my injuries—two fractured ribs, a grade-two concussion, and defensive bruises in varying stages of healing—Liam made a phone call.
By 11:45 p.m., the hospital doors parted for Chloe Vance. Chloe was not just my attorney; she was one of the most ruthless corporate litigators in the city. She marched into the consultation room adjacent to my bay, carrying a thick leather briefcase.
Ethan, now handcuffed to a chair in the corner under police guard, glared at her. Chloe ignored him entirely. She approached my bed and began laying out the original, unredacted operating agreements for Apex Development—the ones Ethan had never bothered to read.
"As you know," Chloe said smoothly, her voice carrying across the room, "your late father's trust controls exactly fifty-one percent of the voting shares in Apex Development. You are the sole beneficiary."
Ethan strained against his cuffs. "That’s ceremonial bullshit! I built that company!"

Chloe adjusted her glasses, finally looking at him. "It is legally binding, Mr. Vale. Furthermore, Section 4, Paragraph B outlines the morality and fraud clauses. It allows for the immediate, emergency removal of any corporate officer who commits an act of violence connected to the concealment of company misconduct."
She turned back to me. "He didn't beat you just because you wanted a divorce. He beat you because he knew your audit would expose his embezzlement. He was silencing a whistleblower."
