Chapter 23 - Greed and Tears

Marcus wasted no time launching a vicious, subterranean campaign of corporate sabotage. Leveraging his newly revealed shareholder rights, he aggressively petitioned for an emergency vote of no confidence, taking direct, unapologetic aim at the domestic abuse support foundation. He slithered through the boardrooms and private clubs, whispering poison into the ears of the directors. His core argument was as insidious as it was effective: he claimed I was recklessly hemorrhaging the company’s capital to "heal my own personal psychological wounds," sacrificing their hard-earned dividends on the altar of my private martyrdom.

The strategy was brutally effective. Several of the older board members, men whose loyalty was tethered exclusively to their bank accounts, began to audibly waver. Marcus promised them astronomical returns and unprecedented market expansion if the "frivolous charity project" was immediately dissolved.

Late that evening, the weight of the impending boardroom coup hung heavy in my dimly lit office. I was intensely scrutinizing the projected financial defense when Liam quietly entered. He stepped behind my chair, his strong arms wrapping around my shoulders in a grounding embrace, his chin resting near my temple. "They aren't acting on logic, you know," Liam murmured, his eyes scanning the grim spreadsheets. "He is deliberately striking at their most primal instinct: greed." I leaned back into his solid warmth, a dangerous, calculated plan beginning to crystallize in my exhausted mind. "If it is greed that motivates them," I replied softly into the quiet room, "then it is time we show them the exact, devastating price of being greedy."
