Chapter 22 - Bloodlines

The cowardly architect behind the anonymous threat did not remain in the shadows for long. Less than a week later, Marcus, Ethan’s estranged half-brother, materialized from the European socialite circuit like a ghost summoned by the scent of vulnerability. He strutted into the corporate headquarters exuding an aura of polished, aristocratic elegance, dressed in a bespoke Italian suit that failed to mask the familiar, venomous undercurrent he shared with his imprisoned sibling. Marcus did not come empty-handed; he smugly announced his control over a hidden fifteen percent of Apex’s voting shares, meticulously concealed within a labyrinthine shell company I had not yet managed to purge from the registry.
"You really have done a remarkably thorough job scrubbing the floors, haven't you?" Marcus sneered, bypassing the guest chairs to insolently seat himself in the high-backed leather chair that had once belonged to Ethan. He leaned back, tenting his fingers. "But in your frantic rush to clean house, you seemingly forgot one fundamental truth about this family. Our roots run unfathomably deep."
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, bathed in the harsh morning light, entirely unfazed by his theatrical display of dominance. I slowly intertwined my fingers, meeting his predatory gaze with an expression of absolute, terrifying serenity. "It is a basic principle of gardening, Marcus," I replied, my voice dropping to a dangerously soft cadence. "The deeper the roots, the more earth you have to violently tear up when you finally rip the weeds out. And unlike your brother, I have never been afraid of getting my hands dirty to protect what is rightfully mine."
