Chapter 39 - The Promise

"What about the life you had?" Arthur asked, leaning against the railing. "Do you miss it?"
"I don't have a life anymore," I said, a small smile forming. "I have a future."
I stood up and walked over to Ethan, picking him up and swinging him around. He shrieked with delight.
"You're fast, Mommy!" he laughed.
"I'm fast enough to keep you safe," I whispered.
I looked at Arthur, and for a moment, I saw a future we hadn't dared to dream of—a life where we didn't have to be soldiers.
"Are you staying?" I asked him.
"I'm not going anywhere," he said.

I looked out at the garden, at the flowers blooming in the dusk. The ghosts of the past had finally been laid to rest.
The nightmare was over, and a new, beautiful day was just beginning.
