Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Deed
Richard’s laughter echoed through the high-ceilinged living room, rich with an arrogance that had been funded entirely by my family's estate. He swirled the remaining bourbon in his glass, looking at me as if I were a hysterical child throwing a tantrum.
"Your house, Amanda?" Richard sneered, stepping away from Brooke, though her hand lingered in the air where his arm had just been. "Don't be ridiculous. We've been married for five years. Under state law, this property is community asset distribution. Half of everything you own belongs to me. If anyone is leaving, it’s you and that undisciplined brat."
Brooke offered a soft, pitying sigh, smoothing down the front of her designer dress. "Amanda, please. Think of the baby. Chloe needs a stable environment. We were going to tell you gently when you got back on Sunday, but since you're here, it's best to be adult about this. Richard and I are building a real family now."
I didn't answer them. I kept my arms locked tightly around Ethan, whose small hands were still clutching the lapels of my trench coat, his face buried in my neck. The smell of dust and old chocolate from his stained dinosaur pajamas pressed against my skin, a physical reminder of the cruelty he had endured while I was away.
"Vivian," I said, turning my gaze to my mother-in-law, who was still cradling the baby girl in pink lace. "You told my son to crawl on the floor because he wanted to play with toys in his own home."
"It's not his home anymore, dear," Vivian said smoothly, not even looking up from the infant. "A true grandson carries the Whitman bloodline with dignity. This boy... well, his temperament leaves much to be desired. He takes after your side of the family. Common."

I reached into my handbag, my fingers closing around my phone. I didn't dial the police. I opened a secure banking app and dialed a direct, encrypted number to my family's private legal counsel.
"Arthur," I said when the call connected on the first ring. "Activate the trust contingency clause. Section Four. The infidelity and asset abuse provision. Yes, right now."
