Chapter 11 - The Unseen Shadow

The golden sunset on the Jacaranda Lane estate felt like a warm blanket, shielding us from the cold, harsh memories of the past. For a year, the silence of the countryside had been our greatest comfort. However, as the laughter of my son, Ethan, echoed across the lawn, a faint, rhythmic sound from the far end of the property caught my attention.
It was the steady crunch-crunch of gravel beneath heavy boots.
Arthur noticed my sudden stillness, his hand resting instinctively on the folder he had just closed. He followed my gaze toward the iron perimeter fence, obscured by a dense thicket of hydrangeas.
"Is someone there?" Arthur asked, his voice low, lacking his usual corporate detachment.

In the distance, the golden retriever puppy stopped chasing Ethan and began to growl, a low, guttural warning directed at the treeline.
"Ethan, come here, baby," I called out, trying to keep the terror from bleeding into my tone.
Ethan ran toward me, his face glowing with sweat and joy. "What's wrong, Mommy?"
"Just play inside for a moment with Arthur," I said, my eyes scanning the shadows of the hedges.
Arthur stood, his posture shifting into one of defensive readiness. He had been my rock for a year, but even he looked unsettled by the sudden shift in the atmosphere.

"Amanda, stay close to the house," Arthur warned, moving toward the gate.
A single, metallic click echoed from the hydrangeas—the sound of a safety being disengaged. It was a sound I had hoped to never hear again in this lifetime. My breath caught in my throat. If Richard was in prison, who was standing in my garden?
