Chapter 29 - The Breach
The door exploded inward, wood shards flying like shrapnel. I was thrown back, slamming into the wall. A figure stepped through the debris, rifle raised. I didn't think; I kicked his weapon aside and tackled him, the two of us crashing onto the floor.
He was strong, but I was fueled by something he couldn't comprehend—the need to protect my son. I drove my elbow into his chin, knocking him senseless.
"Two minutes!" Elias yelled.
Arthur was engaged in a brutal hand-to-hand fight with another attacker near the server racks. I scrambled up, pulled my pistol, and fired once, ending the threat.
"Arthur, are you okay?"
"I'm fine!" he groaned, wiping blood from his forehead. "Just keep them away from the console!"
The room was filling with smoke. The air was getting hard to breathe. I moved to the window, firing at the encroaching silhouettes. The snow outside was turning red. This was a massacre, not a battle.
"One minute!"
I could hear the rumble of a helicopter approaching. They weren't just sending soldiers; they were calling in air support.
"Elias, if we lose the connection, can we finish it later?"
"No!" Elias shouted. "If the connection breaks, the encryption locks permanently!"

"Then we hold the line," I said, taking a position in the center of the room. I was the last barrier between the truth and the abyss.
I felt a strange, cold calm. If I died here, at least the truth would die with me, and the Serpent would be exposed to the world.
