Chapter 35 - The Confrontation

The door slid open to reveal a room that looked like a war room, complete with holographic displays and maps of the entire globe. Sitting at the head of the table, his back to us, was a man in an impeccably tailored suit.
"I've been expecting you, Amanda," he said, not turning around.
The voice sent a chill down my spine. It was the man who had been the shadow behind every tragedy in my life.
"Turn around," I demanded, my gun trained on his back.
He stood up slowly and turned. It was a man I hadn't seen in twenty years—a former mentor, the one who had taught me how to survive in the world of shadows.
"Silas," I breathed.
"Hello, Amanda," he smiled, devoid of warmth. "You’ve grown so much. Your mother would be proud of how much blood you've spilled."
"You were the architect of all of it," I said, my voice trembling with rage. "The trials, the kidnappings, the misery... all for what?"
"For order," he said, gesturing to the global maps. "The world is chaos. We provide structure. We manage the evolution of the species. And you, my dear, were the perfect subject."
"I am not your subject," I said, stepping forward. "I am the one who stops you."
