Chapter 19 - Face to Face

"You’re a hard woman to kill, Amanda," a voice called out from behind the sofa. It was smooth, devoid of any humanity, exactly like Victoria’s.
"Who are you?" I demanded, reloading my weapon.
"A loyalist," the man replied. "The serpent does not forget. We were told you were the one who broke the circle. The one who destroyed the legacy. We aren't here for the money. We’re here for the boy."
"He’s not a legacy," I shouted. "He’s a child!"
"He is the template," the man corrected. "The bloodline is fading. He is the last of the pure strain. We don't care about your love for him. We care about the future of the house."
He stood up, firing a burst of rounds that shattered the marble of my pillar. I peeked around, getting a clean shot at his shoulder. He collapsed, clutching his arm, his rifle sliding across the floor.
I rushed over, kicking the gun away and pressing my pistol to his forehead.
"Tell me who else is left," I said, my voice cold.
The man laughed, a wet, choking sound. "You think you’ve won because you killed a few of us? The circle is vast, Amanda. There are others waiting. Others who are much more patient than we were."
"I’ll kill them all," I said.
"You’ll try," he hissed.
Before I could ask another question, he bit down on something hidden in his tooth. His body stiffened, his eyes rolling back into his head, and he went limp.

Cyanide. They were fanatics.
I stood over him, my hands shaking. The house was finally quiet, but I knew the man was right. This wasn't the end. It was only the beginning.
