Chapter 23 - The Mole

"Amanda, get out of there!" Arthur’s voice spiked with panic. "The alarm just tripped on the outer perimeter. They know you're in."
"I need to download this data," I argued, plugging my drive into the main console. The progress bar crawled forward. 20%... 40%...
"They're not coming from the outside," Arthur said, his tone shifting. "I’m looking at the thermal sensors. Someone is already inside the warehouse. They’re closing in on your position."
I pulled the drive just as it hit 80%, throwing myself behind a massive server rack. Footsteps—rhythmic, confident—echoed on the concrete floor.
A figure stepped into the light of the server bank. It was Marcus, my own head of security. The man who had sworn to protect Ethan.
"Marcus?" I whispered, my voice trembling with betrayal.
"You were always too curious, Amanda," Marcus said, raising his suppressed pistol. "You had a quiet life. You had a son. Why did you have to go and dig up the dead?"
"You sold us out," I said, creeping toward the edge of the rack. "You let them into my home."
"I didn't sell you out," Marcus corrected, his face twisted in a sneer. "I saved you. If you had stayed quiet, you would have lived. Now, you’re just a liability."

"I'm not a liability," I growled, popping out and firing my weapon.
Marcus dived, the bullet grazing his vest. The warehouse erupted into chaos as we traded fire, the sound deafening in the enclosed space.
